How to choose the right color of hair extensions?

5/5 - (4 votes)

Some questions our Layla Hair team often gets from customers are: Can I color my hair if I have hair extensions? How does one go about picking the right color hair extensions? What sort of colors are hair extensions available in, anyway? How can you tell if a particular color will match your natural tone? These are all important questions. Getting the right color hair is an important part of the process of achieving a beautifully natural look. You may be confusing because different companies and salons use different color measurements on their extensions. Follow some tips below and keep in mind before you choose the perfect color when you buy your hair extensions.

Finding The Same Spot

When choosing a color to match your own hair, the most effective way to find a color match is to look from the middle to the ends. This is the part of your hair that an extension is designed to enhance and it must match as closely as possible. Never choose the hair color of your “roots” as that tends to be a different shade.  The best color to choose for your hair will be the one that matches with the ends of your hair. We recommend to our customers to isolate several strands of their own natural hair and follow the color down from the midsection to the tip. Note whether or not it changes as it reaches the bottom of the strand.

Color Test

If you are buying your extensions at a salon or outlet locally, you can perform a sight test. Simply hold an extension piece up to your hair in natural light to judge whether or not it is a good match. Choose the color that most closely mimics your own hair. It can be useful to bring a friend along – sometimes a fresh eye can make a better judgment, especially if you’ve been preoccupied with trying to find a color match for a long time.

Doing It Online

Many sites that sell extensions via the internet will send color samples for a small fee. It is always worth paying a little extra to make sure that a match is a good one, so don’t be afraid to ask a retailer if they are willing to send you a sample piece in the mail. Other companies will ask for a sample of your natural color to match. In that case, just snip off a curl and send it in for a color analysis. They will then select the best option for your new extensions.

Blend

If your extensions are slightly off color, it isn’t a problem to dye Remy 100 percent human hair to match your own. Synthetic hair will not dye properly. But good quality human hair extensions look, feel and perform exactly like your own hair. Dying the hair extensions to match your own is one way to guarantee a totally uniform color. If the extensions are just slightly lighter, blending them throughout your hair when attaching and styling can give your hair some added dimension and will look like highlights. Curling all of the hair together allows the extensions to have a more natural appearance. Human hair extensions are higher in price than synthetics, but worth the additional cost when you consider that they have a more realistic appearance, can be colored and cut just like your own natural hair and are not susceptible to damage from the high heat from blow dryers and styling appliances like extensions made from synthetic blends

Coloring hair extensions information

  • Synthetic extensions cannot be colored.
  • Human hair extensions can be colored, but only darker or the same color. It’s not advisable to attempt to lighten hair extensions, so be sure to either maintain the same color or go a shade or two darker.
  • If you’re opting for a color change to a darker shade, be sure to do a strand test to make sure the new hair reacts well to your color.
  • If you are still unsure which shade would be the best match or have more than one color in your hair, we can assist with this as well. Include any other information in your email to get our personal recommendations to [email protected]
