What is lace frontal?

In a nutshell, lace frontal is hair weaves sewn into a lace patch. The lace patch runs from ear to ear and is attached along the front edge of your head to secure all the hair. You can either choose to sew it in or glue it in. Because it covers a much larger area than lace closures do, lace frontal is perfect for those who suffer hair loss along the hairline.

Lace frontals are also wonderful for different hairstyles. While you cannot do a high ponytail with lace closures, you can do so with lace frontals because the tracks are tightly sewn in and cannot be shown. The only downside is because of the large lace frontal sizes, which is 13×4, it takes more time and effort to cover the visibility of lace frontal.

Frontals are usually made of lace, silk, or silicone, in which lace is the most popular material. It is much cheaper than silk but can still deliver a soft and comfortable feel. The knots on the surface of a lace frontal give room for your scalp to “communicate” with the environment, such as releasing sweat and oil or soak in the moisture. Not to mention they are easy to be concealed and appear like your actual pores.

There are mainly two types of lace frontals in the market today: the one that rests on your hairline and the one that stretches around the hairline and the entire head like a 360 fit. It gives you a natural and full look with less installation time.

Why do lace frontal sizes matter?

It’s simple: because we do not share the same head size. Some women have big head whereas others own small heads. If the frontal lace size does not fit them correctly, it may look uneven, funny and detectable.

It also depends on each’s preferences. For experienced wig wearer, they will know exactly what they look for in size. If you have a big head but still want a smaller lace frontal as it takes less time to cover, you can have it trimmed. It is all up to you!

How to pick the right lace frontal sizes?

Some people may wonder “Ok I know lace frontal sizes is important but as a first-time user, how do I know which suits best for me?” This process requires only a measuring tape and a mirror. We will show you how to do it.

You need to look straight into the mirror. Take the measuring tape and measure the length from ear to ear, across your forehead. That should be the length of your lace frontal.

Now, it’s time to determine the width of your lace frontal. Grab the measuring tape and measure the width of your forehead, from the hairline all the way down to the right before the brow bone. You can roughly divide the number by half, and that should be your lace frontal’s width.

Most people’s figures are going to be around the standard lace frontal sizes, which is 13×4. However, if your measurement is nowhere near the standard statistics, you can ask the hair supplier to tailor it for you. At Layla Hair, we customize the lace frontal per customer’s request.

How to choose the frontal length?

Many say that the length of the hair frontal depends entirely on your facial shape, hair textures, and preference of the style. Is it true?

There are too many questions appearing when you choose a hair extension. What length bundles should I get? What length frontal should I get? And more. The longer the length of the hair bundle, the longer your lace frontal length is. Hence, making the right decision on the length of the hair is important. You should go up one to three inches if you like adding some waves or curls on the hair system. Because, you know, the curly texture tends to look shorter than the sleek and straight hair. Opt for a frontal at 20-24 inches in length and style it by adding some curls for a modern hairstyle. You should purchase a human hair extension so that you can style it with thermal tools and dye it.

I have a fat round face, how to determine what length closure to get? For facial shape, you should choose a long frontal for round faces. It helps conceal your chubby cheeks and narrow your face look. If you were born with a heart-shaped face, it’s your lucky. This facial shape suits most hair lengths and styles. Hence, opt for any hair frontal you like and style it to get the desired hair look.

Should I get all my bundles at the same length?

Choosing the right length of frontal and other hair extensions is essential for reaching the hairstyle you want. Take a look at the frontal length chart and choose the suitable length you would like your hair extension to be. If you are looking for a fuller hair look with similar lengths, you should get your hair bundles in the same length. You love your hair appears with layers, choose bundles in different lengths. For example, you can get hair bundles in 16″, 18″, 20″ to create layers.

Please keep in mind that you choose the length that you will be happy with. In other words, you feel comfortable when wearing this hair. In case you are not sure about the length, it would better if you buy long hair because you can cut or style it shorter.

How many bundles do I need for a sew-in with leave out?

The number of hair bundles you use depends on the hair you want to be. It varies based on your face, shape of your head, hairstyle, and so on. Frontals are usually used to cover a large portion of your head, along your hairline, so you have to use 2-3 hair bundles. For example, you can get three bundles from 12-20″ to create your hair. If you choose longer hair bundles, you may need four. Is 2 bundles of hair enough for a sew in? No problem! Some prefer two bundles for a more realistic hair look. To cover the front of your head or protect your hair, we suggest you use at least two hair bundles.

The hair textures also affect the number of bundles you use. You want to go for deep wave styles, you just need less hair to achieve your desired look. Often, straight hair texture is usually less dense than other textures (wavy, curly, kinky curly, etc.), so you’ll need more hair to get a fuller look. Luckily, frontal hair extension is a great investment as it can last a year or more with proper maintenance. Your hair extension style and its lifespan are entirely all up to you. One more time, if you are seeking a thin and more natural hair, you most likely need 2-3 hair bundles.

How to install lace frontals (sew-in method)

The sew-in way for lace frontals is perhaps the most widely-loved method because it is more secure and seamless than the glue-in method. Typically, with this method, you will have to go to the salon and ask a professional to do it for you.

The sew-in way for lace frontals is perhaps the most widely-loved method because it is more secure and seamless than the glue-in method.

For this method, besides the lace frontal, you have to prepare a need and thread that matches the hair color and a hair net.

The essential steps

Step 1: Prep your hair. You should wash your hair and let it dry completely. Wet hair creates a perfect environment for bacteria to grow, especially under the lace frontal. So before sewing in the frontal, make sure your hair is clean and dry.

Step 2: Braid your hair into a cornrow. You can go for whatever style of cornrow you want as long as it stays close to the scalp and appears as flat as possible. The flatter the cornrow is, the better it lays underneath the lace frontal.

Step 3: For the cornrows that stick out, flip it to lay flat on the head and sew the part in by using thread and needle. Put the needle to both the embroidered hair and the cornrow on your head, wrap the thread twice around the needle to secure the hair part. Repeat several times until the piece is secured, then cut the thread.

Step 4: this is optional. If you use a hair net, sew it in the cornrow with the same technique. Make sure that the net, or cap lay flat over your head. There should be no lumps or bumps.

Step 5: Place the lace frontal on your head. Sew one side of the frontal down behind your ear. Once you have done on the side, pull the frontal to the opposite side as tightly as you can to make it lay flat. Sew the back portion of the frontal to the hair net or your cornrow (if you don’t wear hair net). Sew all the way until you reach the other side

Step 6: Take a scissor and cut the excess lace patch. Pull some hair down and brush the baby hair to cover the lace.
