What is the difference between toupees and wigs?

Today when searching for the best way to cover your head, you are likely to come across the term, hair system or hair replacement system. This is the all-encompassing name that the hair industry is now leaning towards to refer to hair, be it human or synthetic, attached to some kind of base that is usually worn by a person to mask partial or full hair loss. Wigs and Toupees (also written as toupee) are therefore types of hair systems.

Choosing the best system for the coverage needed is the first step in the hair replacement process. However, various types of hair replacement options such as a wig and toupee are usually used interchangeably, it is not easy to tell the difference between them, even harder to decide which type is the best choice for you.

Here is a brief demontration of two common types mentioned above, as well as the coverage each is designed to provide.

One of the oldest hair replacement systems, evidence of wig wearing dates back several centuries and can be seen in artifacts recovered from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. While wigs/wiglets have evolved since then, the concept of a wig being made of real (human or animal) or artificial hair and intended to cover the entire scalp has stayed relatively static.

Typically wigs are removed each night by the wearer and not worn during certain activities such as bathing. Wigs are also often used as part of a costume and several famous actors, musicians, athletes and other celebrities such as Britney Spears, Andre Agassi, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Cher have popularized the wearing of wigs for both theatrical or everyday purposes.

A toupee is a type of hair piece intended to cover baldness on the top of the head. This partial hair piece is usually held in place with two-sided special tape or liquid toupee glue and blends with existing hair on the sides and back of the head. Typically men use toupees more than women, due to the coverage needed for male pattern baldness.

A good quality toupee is made to match the wearer’s natural hair as closely as possible. The best ones are made from human hair, although toupees made from synthetic materials or animal hair are available. A professional stylist who has experience attaching a toupee should be consulted to attach it the user’s scalp and to remove it when it needs to be replaced. Metal clips may be used to attach a toupee, but this is not as secure as using a glue to keep it in place.

Both A Toupees and a Wigs require proper care to keep them looking their best. Consumers who have bought a toupee should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning it. A special shampoo and conditioner may be needed for this purpose. Using the right product will help to keep it looking its best.

Caring for a wig may also require a special shampoo made for this purpose. It should be washed after it has been worn several times to keep it looking its best. The wig can be cut and styled just like natural hair. Both a toupee and a wig can enhance the wearer’s appearance and help to boost his or her confidence.

Besides two types of hair extensions above, I would like to give you another hair replacement option which many people easily think it the same as a wig or toupee. That is hair piece and it is definitely different from wigs or toupees.

Hair piece

In contrast to a wig/wiglet, hair pieces are designed for various kinds of coverage. Hair extensions, toupees, head-wraps, and bangs are all types of hair pieces. The coverage of a hair piece depends on your needs. For instance, Complete Image Hair Design offers hair pieces that are customized to each client and can fill in thinning hair or cover an entire scalp.

Whereas a wig usually is taken off at night and during other activities by the wearer, a hair piece can be crafted to be more durable, allowing it to stay on while sleeping, showering, exercising, etc. Wearers of these kinds of hair pieces typically do not remove it themselves, and instead return to the provider for adjustments and touch-up’s as needed.

That is a short description of what a wigs, toupee and hair piece are. Hopefully it will help you a part to define what exactly you need for your own hair. If that is hard, you should go to your hairdresser for reference.
